Great Concept - Very Poor Quality
I love the idea of a multitasking machine but the quality is just not there. I have returned two of these bakers because they were cracked on the inside accross the screw holes which caused the plates to fall out. The second one I purchased was not only cracked but the latch would not stay closed. I used the first one to make waffles and pizzelles. They baked very slowly, much slower than the recipes/directions indicated and only the bottom (which gets hotter than the top) would get crispy and brown. VillaWare has a long way to go to perfect this product.

booklet
I like the machine, but it arrived without a recipe booklet/manual. If anyone can help, please e-mail.

VillaWare 5230, marvelous!
After searching for a product to make pizelles, I purchased this one, as it could do three things and the price was great. It arrived promptly (even though I live in Hawaii, and ordered for Christmas, late). Its easy to use, way easy to clean. Makes delicious, fast waffles. Making a sandwhich was kind of messy, but it cleaned up by just rinsing! FAST/EASY/SIMPLE/GREAT QUALITY/NAME BRAND.
Amazon rocks!

Waste of money. They should be ashamed.
I too bought this based on the good reviews. Now I see the bad reviews popping up. Too late for me but not for you! Don't buy this. Although it does seem very nice when you first unpack it, it does not perform anywhere near it's price expectation. I have returned it after several frustrating sessions of angry kids and wasted batter.

My experience has been much the same as the last 2 reviewers. But I want to add one thing. The cord on this unit seems thin and cheap. That is an indicator of poor power management right there as something that would need the power this hulk needs to be and stay hot would have a more substantial cord.

I echo the other negative reviews, do not buy this, you will be sorry.

Absolute piece of expensive JUNK!
I bought one thinking the larger size and villaware name would yield great results. I presently use 2 small cuisinarts to pump out enough waffles to keep the masses happy. I cannot tell you strongly enough what an utter failure this maker is. Just like the previous reviewer, I had it on high for several minutes and the lower parts ended up dry and burnt and the upper uncooked. Uneven, slow and way too underpowered. The top sits down unevenly and the weight allows for little flexibility in top rising. It is a shame as the manufacturing and materials seems to be very high quality, but the design is horrid. Proof is in the pudding, and after 8 minutes in this thing at high, the waffles still looked like pudding. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!!

Poor performer or bad luck
I got this model due to the great reviews. However, due to performance problems, I had to get my first iron replaced by Villaware and the second unit has all the same problems. I plan to return it for a refund and try another model or brand. I must say that Villaware customer support was helpfull. Unfortunately, they can't deliver a workable product.

The biggest problem is the uneven cooking between the two plates. At the highest setting, the top plate could only just start to brown the waffle, while the bottom was almost black. This is not a gravity & batter problem because I flipped the iron over and the plates performed the same in their new positions. (i.e. the top of the waffle was now overdone, while the bottom was underdone)

Other minor problems include a cold spot near the center of the irons. No audible alert (as described in the manual) when the waffle is done, just a green light. The clip to keep the waffle maker closed can unclip on its own.

The non-stick surface worked very well for me.

Heats unevenly
The waffles are not a good as the ones from the commercial waffle maker found at Sunday buffets. The bottom of the pockets would be crisp and the tops a little soggy. It does heat up quickly. We later purchased the Villaware waffle maker and are happier with it.

Inexpensive waffle iron works well
I purchased this waffle iron recently at Target for less than $$$$. I was willing to buy a more expensive unit, but reviews of the expensive units weren't that great, so I decided to give a budget-priced unit with high wattage a try. I've been very surprised with how well it works. The 1200 watt unit heats up within a few minutes (a green light turns on to indicate when it's ready). I give the grids a very light spray of Pam before filling with batter each time and never have any sticking. Each waffle takes 5 minutes to bake and they come out crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. It doesn't have an indicator to tell you when the waffle is done, but I just set my timer for 5 minutes, no problem. Between waffles, it heats up instantly, no waiting to pour another waffle in. I downgraded it slightly because the design makes the waffles flatter (not as tall) as they are in restaurants. The unit is very sleek and pretty as well.

They don't make them like they used to
We have an old farberware waffle maker for many years and used it many times. It finally gave out and we replaced it this one. The new one is heavy and has a lot of metal. The doneness control works well but the maker cooks a little unevenly. I thought extra weight would help even out the hotspot(s). There is an underdone circle in the middle of the cooked waffles. It isn't raw but not brown as the outer circle.

Died the First Time I Used It
If I could give this 0 stars, I would. I purchased this wafflemaker and then tried it this weekend. The power light came on. The instructions said to wait until the green light came on and then pour in the batter. The green light never came on. Then the power light went off. The thing was dead and wouldn't heat up. I've since returned it and I am now looking for a different brand. My advice is to avoid this waffle maker. Toastmaster has not figured out how to make a working waffle maker.

Well, it's better than our old $5 tag-sale waffle iron.
We've used our new iron 4-5 times. There are three things we don't like. (1) can't remove the plates to wash them, and can't immerse the iron. In other words, cleaning it is a major pain. (2) the light is nice for knowing when the iron is hot enough, but I thought it would also indicate when waffles are done. It does not - you have to watch the steam and check, like with any other iron. (3) the waffles are not cooked evenly on both sides. When one side is done, the other is about 90% done.

But, as the title says, we like it better than our old one. I just expected more for the money and from the Toastmaster name. It's so hard to find an iron that is not for Belgian waffles.

    Awesome!
After extensive research, I bought this for my family of 7, and have found it convenient and easy to use! Other reviews said it was hard to clean, but I have found with other waffle makers that there is no real need to run water over them. I just wipe off the outside and any oil that has dripped out, and it's ready for the next Saturday morning family breakfast! Stands nicely and doesn't take up much space in pantry. I spray Pam before putting the batter in, and I've never had a problem. I highly recommend this waffle maker!

    WHO DESIGNED THIS?
Why would anyone design a waffle maker that is hard to clean? If you like spending your time picking waffle batter out of crevices with a toothpick then this is the waffle maker for you. You also have to remove the waffle before the light goes out or it will be overdone. I judge when I should open the lid by the amount of steam coming out but should I have to? Don't companies test their products before putting them into production? I won't be buying anything by Black and Decker again.

    Could be better
Like the other reviewers, I agree that this waffle maker is hard to clean, especially in the front. There is a nickel-width gap where all the spillover can get into. It's very hard to clean that gap out. Also, it DOES overcook the waffles. So, don't follow the timer. Cook for 2.5 minutes and it's perfect. Decent sized waffles. Looks nice with the chrome finish.

    Nice waffles
I love Belgian waffles, and I got this for my mom for Christmas so she could enjoy them too. The first machine we had, everything was burnt. So we returned it and got another one. I found out that if you wait until the timer light goes out, the waffles are a bit dark for my preference, but I solved that problem by taking them out before the light went out. CHanging batters also helped.

The size of the waffles is good, and the maker forms a pretty good seal. I havent had batter leak out of it yet, and if i did, it's easy to wipe clean. I have never gotten batter on the lower handle, as I put the batter in the middle of the machine and sort of spread it outwards.

Overall, it's a great waffle maker, and I recommend it.

    Handle too hot!
I ordered one and during use the handle became too hot to touch. I had to open with an oven mit which is very clumsy. I called Krups and they said they have gotten a few calls about this and to exchange it. I asked if my new one will have the same problem and they said "no". Well, I exchanged it for a new one and it had the same problem. Obviously, I returned it and am now shopping for a different brand.

    Uneven baking
Another thing to add to the list of problems (hot handle, ridiculous tiny, deep crevices to clean with a toothpick) other reviewers have mentioned is the lack of a "floating hinge". It is unable to keep the two plates parallel as the waffle expands. So the front opens further, resulting in a back dark half and light front half. Of course, if you underfill, you'll get a dark bottom and light top.

The Krups brochure included has a motto on the front: "Quality by design." Well, quality is indeed directly related to design and this unit has rather little of either.

(BTW, some reviewers seem to have misunderstood the purpose of the "ready" light. As explained in the manual, it merely indicates whether the heating element is on. You can start baking when it first turns off, but when it comes back on it doesn't necessarily mean the waffle is done. It just means the plates cooled to the point where the thermostat kicked back in.)

    To Hot to Handle
I purchased this new waffle iron since my old Toastmaster was not heating properly. This new Krups is a disaster. All the instructions were followed for first use. We put in the batter and set our timer for the recommended four minutes. The waffle was burnt. The handle was so hot I could not hold it to open the iron and had to grab a pot holder. The hand opening is very small and not designed to have a pot holder in there.
We put some more batter in for the second waffle and set the timer for three minutes. The handle was still very hot and the waffle was dark brown. Dinner is not going well at this stage. The next waffle we tested when the light on the top went out. I still had to use something to open the top but the waffle was still dark.
At the end of cooking there was a puddle, not drops, of water on the counter. It must have come from the steam. Another design flaw is there is no overflow protection.

This baby is going back to the store. I will continue to look for another toastmaster or better designed item.

you could get burned on this one
interbake 3 interchangeable baker, is heavy and awkward to handle and store, quality control was not in effect when this was made, one pin that hold the grids in place and two clips on the grills were broke. i have e-mailed the company twice and called twice and one month latter i still have not received the replacement parts, the broken pin allowed the grid when raised to fall down, thus burning a hand in the process, the person i spoke to at villa ware acted like the customer is the least of her concern, thus i would recommend not to buy a villa-ware product, if you need help from the company you are not going to get it

      Great All In One Baker
Unlike the other reviewer, I love my VillaWare Baker. For the most part I have primarily used the pizzelle maker (the instruction manual includes a great recipe) and the waffle maker (again, the manual includes a bunch of different recipes for all three uses.) The plates are easy to take out, put in and wash, and it heats up quickly. My only recommendation is to use non-stick spray with this baker. Even though the surfaces are non-stick, I find that the spray helps. Overall, a wonderful purchase!

I finally tossed mine in the trash where it belongs!
I've owned this alleged waffle maker for years now. About once a year I break it out to make waffles. The one I have heats fine but the non-stick surface it terrible. I've tried the spray-on vegetable coating and even brushing the hot plates with vegetable oil and nothing works. I have tried different type of waffle batter and still nothing works.

After I get frustrated and clean the waffle maker up I usually put it away until the next year. But not any more, off to the trash it went. It may be good for some other uses, but a waffle iron that won't make waffles in my opinion is useless.

Even though I've shopped on Amazon since the beginning this is the first review that I've written. I've checked the past review of this product and found a "Top 10" reviewer that gave it 5 stars. Of the more then 1600 reviews that she gave, all where 5 stars. She is either extremely lucky or full of the stuff that my ex-waffle maker made.

If you want a nonstick waffle maker, consider another
I've had this waffle maker for almost 5 years, and it does make decent waffles but I am sure there is something better out there. This waffle maker has 2 main problems (and it seems as if many others agree): 1) poor nonstick coating and 2)low temperature. The nonstick coating on this waffle maker is a joke. Even when I add more oil to my recipes than called for the waffles will stick unless I coat the grids in oil before making each waffle. You have to coat the grids very quickly, too, so as not to allow the grids to cool to much. The temperature must be on the highest setting to make waffles, and it usually takes 10-12 minutes (depending on how much batter I pour in) to get the waffle to the appropriate doneness. If the grids are well coated in oil and the grids are hot when you pour in your batter, this waffler does make a decent waffle. I think it just requires more effort than it should. The griddle works better than the waffler, but just be careful again with the not-so-nonstick coating.

Good waffles but takes a long time to cook
It is true that this waffle maker requires a bit of practice to get a good waffle. It needs a good solid 5 minutes or more to warm up. You need to cook waffles at the highest temperture setting. You need to pour just the right amount of batter in (make sure the whole area is covered) or else they will not get crisp. You need to spray Pam on both sides regardless of how much oil or butter is in the batter. You need to be patient. They take a good long time to cook, sorry, I have not actually timed it yet but it is probably between 5-10 minutes.
Because the inserts are removable (the best feature) for other cooking methods, the hinges are floating - that is why some people note that the lids don't match up evenly. It doesn't really effect the waffles if you lay the lid down properly. Hope that helps.
If is kind of a pain but it makes good waffles.

Six failures!!! Stay clear of Edgecraft products.
There should be an option of zero stars especially in the case of products like this. I write to hopefully put the nails in the coffin of this horrible excuse for a waffle maker. I am now on my 6th unit. The longest I was able to get it to function was 4 months, the average was about 4 uses and one arrived DOA.

We love waffles and (if available) would use it once a week. I believe that anyone who has anything favorable to say about the Waffle Pro is not a big waffle fan, uses the unit infrequently, and was very lucky and received one of the few stable ones they made.

At first I was happy with Edgecraft customer service. They were accomodating and replaced the unit. But after 6 failures it is now painfully obvious to me that they have a serious problem with this unit and are too greedy to recall it and make it right.

This is the most expensive waffle iron on the planet when you factor in the time, energy and money spent repacking and shipping it back. And please do not forget the disappointed faces of my 4 children when breakfast goes from something special to a disaster.

If anyone has a suggestion for a decent waffle maker please pass it along as this one is now going into the trash.

      Great at Shorting Out!
I sent the first one in for repairs under warranty because it shorted out. $ ...and 6 weeks later we received the "repaired" unit, which just "shorted out" again last week, after 5 months more of use.

      WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT.

LISTEN. DO NOT BUY CHEF'S CHOICE PRODUCTS . . . ANY OF THEM. Chef's Choice is the Mexican-made "Sony" of kitchen appliances.

      Complete and utter junk.

      JS

Will stick with this repair prone waffle maker
I've owned this product for over three years and love the way it bakes, especially the option for crisp exterior and soft inside waffles. However, for the second time the thermostat has failed so the unit is back at Edgecraft for about three weeks service time to make the repair. Am having waffle withdrawl with the length of repair time. The good news is they are very customer and service minded and have repaired the unit for this problem no charge even though the warranty had run out for the first failure, and now for the second repair. Aside from the reliability issue, I love this baker better than the other four I sold at yard sales.
