Designed as a gag gift?
The "Misto" olive oil sprayer functioned properly for about five or six sprays, approximately one use. After that it only emitted a stream, however at certain angles it alternately sprays and squirts. I suppose the one-star rating could be for appearance.

Know what you're spraying
I've had my Misto about 5 months and feel it was a good purchase. I prefer using olive oil from Spain for it's strong flavor, and can change the oil if I desire.

One reviewer said the sprayer "spurts"; I would describe it as steady and even, but definitely not a fine spray. The lid is easy to pump, and about 10-15 pumps will spray 12 muffin tins, or a griddle, or a few cookie sheets before running out of "oompf". Another reviewer said the lid "raises up on its own"...don't overpump the thing if you're only using a few squirts! If you put it away with little or no pressure inside, the lid won't push up.

I purchased mine at an exclusive kitchen store and paid $21, so the $17.99 price on Amazon.com is a good deal if you can work out free shipping. I'm planning to buy one for my Mom for Christmas, I'm sure she'll love it!

Why not 5 stars? If the price would come down to about $10, I'd give it 5 stars.

See the Misto Website for Detailed Care Information
Several reviewers have complained about performance of the Misto. It does need regular cleaning. The more highly unsaturated the oil you use, the quicker the spray valve will clog with oxidized, polymerized oil. Varnish is just a vegetable oil selected for the ease with which is oxidizes.

There is a Misto web page with complete care information at:

http://www.misto.com/troubleshooting.html#HowtoInstall

When my pump tube failed, they sent out a replacement. If you look at it carefully you will see that the pump tube does need to be handled gently.

I wish their website offered a way to order replacement parts.

More of an ATOMIZER for perfume than an oil MISTER
Hoffritz sent me this tiny oil mister as replacement for a full sized plastic mister that sprayed oil under pressure, but also leaked from the bottom. The original plastic product had a base that pumped air into the oil chamber and was sold under the name of 'Farberware'. I found this confusing, since 'Hoffritz' was the name on the warrantee pamphlet. When I called Hoffritz to ask for replacement of the defective product, I was treated as if I was being crooked for attempting to return a product that they presumed was no longer being sold. I live on a small island where general merchandise tends to sell slower, but still... no matter when or how long ago they manufactured it, defective is defective all the same, and my warrantee started from the date I purchased it under a 1 year warrantee of merchantability.

The replacement was a big disappointment since they sent only one small atomizer (about 1/3 the size of the original product and worth about 1/3 the cost of the replaced item) that shoots out a solid stream of oil, rather than a spray. The use for this product is limited, and nothing like those I've used in the past. I've owned far better stainless steel pump spritzers that hold a lot more oil, and actually spray a fine mist. I would never pay for this product, and will forever avoid doing business with Hoffritz now knowing how they treat customers with legitimate complaints for returns. If I could have given it a 0 star rating, I would have.

Disappointing product
I am very disappointed with this product. I purchased this oil set because they looked really nice and the Editorial review said that it worked as a mister. When I received the product I immediately tried it out. The first few "sprays" the oil just squirted out in a steady stream, and after a few tries it would spray out with large droplets, not a fine mist. Not at all what I had expected. It works well to add a little bit of oil to a pan, but that's what I have a squeeze bottle for. If you are looking for something pretty to use while oiling your pans while cooking, this product will work for you. But if you are looking for something to grease your cake pans or lightly coat food with oil, this product will not work well. I will be returning mine and trying the Misto one intead.

Nice looking, but...
I read the Misto reviews here on Amazon, and also saw that Cook's Magazine was not impressed with the Misto brand oil sprayer. I wanted something that would work better than Misto and would still not cost a fortune; knowing that Hoffritz makes fine quality kitchen items spurred me to order this "Gourmet Oil Set". I looked on the web and on the hoffritz.com site for additional info on the set, but didn't find anything beyond what's here on the Amazon website - not much.

Today, I received the package, and looked inside - there were the three sprayers pictured and the base, along with 12 labels that could be used to identify the contents of the sprayers. I did not locate any information or directions for the sprayers. The sprayer will stand on a counter without the base.

I immediately filled one of the bottles with light olive oil, the oil that we use most. What I quickly discovered is that this set of sprayers is completely unlike a number of the other oil sprayers on the market, and do not require any "priming", or removal of a cap to create air pressure, you just press the button under the cap with your finger, much like any other spray can or bottle, and the contents come out, in an almost straight stream, with essentially no "mist". While this can be pretty useful for measuring a small amount of oil into a pan for cooking, it again does NOT "mist" out. For uses other than oiling a pan, like coating the surface of a chicken that you'd like to oil before cooking, it is pretty clumsy, streaming out of the sprayer with a fair amount of force, possibly splashing back, and certainly requiring a brush ( or similar ) to even the coating of oil after spraying.

All in all, a nice looking, but somewhat expensive set of small standard spray bottles - Good for what they are, but did not fill the need I had hoped they would.

Gimicky useless kitchen gadget
The product review makes this sound like a neat kitchen accessory. Like some of the other reviewers, I too found that the spraying action was not as advertised. It tends to gum up VERY easily, and requires MANY repeat pumps during use. Mine also began to leak at the seam of the base after about 6 months. (The inside is plastic). Also found the base was not flat when I first purchased this, and I had to use sandpaper to flaten out a crown so it would stand upright. Save your money, and get a nice oil can instead.

Very handy gadget
We grill a lot of vegetables in my household (both on the grill, and in the oven in the wintertime), and this is a great device. Gives a light, uniform coating of oil to the veggies. Other things I use it for include oiling pans, my grill, and for misting the top of an italian pie or calzone with olive oil before baking for a nice golden color. Also, if you coat chicken in a bread crumb mixture, spray it with oil, and then bake it, it comes out crispy on the outside...a healthy alternative if you miss the taste of fried chicken.

We have one, and are ordering a second, so that we can have one for olive oil and another for a lighter vegetable oil.

About the only complaint I have is that if you pump it up too much, the oil mists too well! You'll get a light coating of oil on whatever you're spraying, but there will also be this cloud of tiny oil droplets hanging in the air. What I've learned from experience is just not to pump it up too much.

TRY IT -- YOU'LL LOVE IT!!
When I first got the Misto, I was reluctant to pump it very hard. I've never had anything like it, but it was recommended by a friend, so I gave it a try. I was afraid I would break it. But, I soon learned that I needed to pump it 15-20 times to built up the pressure at first. After that, 4-5 pumps is all that is needed to spray enough oil to do the job. Mostly, I use the Misto to spray olive oil on veggies that I am grilling, or on meat or fish. It puts out a light spray and adds just the right amount of that delicious olive oil taste. I have not had ANY of the problems that the other reviewers stated - such as leaking oil on hands or floor. It works great and sits on my counter next to the stove all the time. I don't know what I did without it. I would recommend it to any gourmet or non-gourmet cooks. You will not be dissapointed.

oil marks on your counters
Unbelievevably, I have actually used two of these over the years. My mother gave me the first one a few years ago when she came to visit. It looked very good, and we started using it to keep olive oil. It is quite handy to have a pouring-ready olive oil container on the counter!

Well, shortly afterwards, we started getting frustrated by the fact that there was a constant ring of oil at the bottom of the can, right over the base (there is a 1mm rim around the base). I would clean it every time I used it - to no avail. Pretty soon we became accustomed to having an oil mark on the counter every time we put the oil can down - to the degree that we would be able to put it right back to where it was by aiming for the base print on the counter.

Of course, I got quite frustrated - I tried everything - cleaning the drip of the pourer every time I used it, cleaning the can itself, inspecting it carefully to look for a leak - nothing doing. My guess is that the welding is not high quality and there is always a light leak, which adds to the fact that every drop of oil staying on the tip when you pour makes it doing to the base and stays on the base ring. Eventually, my wife gave me a very good looking oil can for a birthday and we tossed the old can.

Well, a few years later, I really needed another oil can (so as to have cooking oil at hand on top of salad oil salad oil)- I went browsing and found another one of these for a few dollars- I still can't believe that I bought it. Of course, within a day, I had realized my mistake. I bought another model right away and am waiting to find an opportunity to go to Goodwill to get rid of this one.

So, don't do what I did - learn from my experience - don't buy this oil can, unless you intend to keep it to a decorative use only!

Take care all,

camisdad

Leaks
This things leaks. I mean it leaked about a cup over night. Do not buy.

Mine didn't exactly leak, but...
...I finally got rid of it, since the cheesy "anti-drip" tip on the spout didn't work, and I always ended up with a greasy spot on my stone countertops. Poor value for the $$
