There are better mandolines for less money.
I used to use the German-made Borner V-Slicer Plus mandoline, which has some limitations: it only has two thicknesses of slices (3mm and 10mm). It does two sizes of julienne, like the Bron, but it won't do wavy cuts. I decided to upgrade to the Bron mandoline (same as Norpro).

I wasn't too impressed. When not in use, the julienne blades dangle below the path of the slices, slightly scoring the underside of each slice as it comes out. Also, when not in use, the julienne blades get in the way of the adjustment plate and limit how much you can open the cutting slot to (I'm guessing) less than 1/4 inch. If you want to make thicker slices and/or get rid of the scoring, you have to get out a nut driver to remove the julienne blade assembly.

The blades are not particularly sharp after you use it for a while. They can cut yellow squash fine, but sweet potatoes jam halfway through the cutting slot. This makes it fairly dangerous to use because things jump around. I just saw a Bron in a store which had a different straight blade. Instead of being one piece, it had a separate leading edge spot-welded to the rest of the plate. Maybe this would solve the sharpness problem.

The mandoline guard is a complete joke. It is exremely noisy, can't hold larger items, can't hold skinny items (like carrots) upright, pushes down on the item at an angle so things tend to pop out or flip over, doesn't hold the item securely aginst the bottom so slices are uneven thickness, etc. I sent it back.

I think this particular mandoline is living on its reputation. I've gone back to using the Borner which provides MUCH better straight slices (but no wavy cuts), and only costs about 1/3 as much. It also has a much better safety holder. The frame is all plastic, so it's not good for heavy use, but the blades are very sharp and it's very easy to use: just a gentle zip-zip back and forth and the slices pile up.

Just Awfull
Price doesn't always correlate with quality. So proves the Norpro. I found that this unit is clumsy and clogs often. The guard (sold separately) will not admit reasonably sized items, e.g. a large potato, doesn't secure the item to be sliced, and leaves an annoying amount of waste. Their legal department should take a look at the policy of selling the mandoline without a guard. You are looking at some serious time in the emergency room without it. I suggest you look elsewhere.

Every Serious Cook Needs One Of These
I have fallen in love with this wonderful piece of steel.
It can be dangerious, but you need to know how to use it.
This mandoline is great for shredding veg.
Example Carrots, potatoes, summer squash, and zucchini.
I love my Mondoline

Broken Wire
Great price for this type of cheese slicer. The marble is beautiful, although the plastic wire holder detracts from the overall appearance of the product. Like several other reviewers, my cheese slicer arrived with a broken wire. It is is disappointing that the manufacturer does not address this shipping issue. Make sure to qualify for free shipping when purchasing this item, as it would have otherwise cost me $7.35 to ship this item due to the weight of the marble.

simple and classy
The wire may be fine, but it is strong. I like the simple appearance of this cheese board and the marble adds a lot of class, it can be used both formally and casually. It is a nice size so that you may serve several cheeses at once with out crowding. The cutter sliced beautifully through both soft and hard cheeses.

need larger one
I just brought a cheese slicer to slice the block of cheese my friend brought back to me. But the block was to big for the slicer. Do you make a larger slicer for a block that is about ten pounds. It measure about 7" by 14" long? If you do would you give me the price on one? Thank you.

You Don't Always Get What You Pay For
Inexpensive compared to other mandolin type slicers, so my expectations were not high. Even so, this item is a waste of money.

Only two thicknesses for slices. Both too thick for potato chips.

Inserts don't stay in place. Need to hold them in place with one hand while slicing with the other. If you don't the back end will pop up at the end of each stroke and your slices will be wedge shaped.

Large julienne insert makes good french fries (if you hold it in place), but the vertical blades get bent too easily.

Too small! A russet potato is a couple of inches too long to use without cutting off an inch or two. So if you like your fries long, forget it.

Pay a few extra bucks and get something useful.

Pretty Good Item for the Price
I've owned this close to 8 years. I find myself using it more recently--as I was initially disappointed in it. Disappointments: 1) the grater is not very sharp. It mashes potatoes rather than shredding them. Fine for latkes-not so good for hash browns. I prefer other stand-alone graters. This is troubling, as I was looking for a way to save my fingers! 2) The slices can be thin and consistent--but I'd prefer one even thinner setting. 3) The grip/vegetable holder is designed so that a fair amount of vegetable is left when slicing or grating. It's impossible to rig it to grate/slice to the end. Therefore, it's not that much better than using another tool. Pluses: 1) It's very cheap. 2) It's easy to store. 3) It's easy to assemble/take apart. 4) It's easy to clean. Worth the money, but if you're a frequent cook--it's probably better to invest in the $... model! It was good for me to become acquainted with the value of a mandoline before I decided whether to spend more money on a better one.

Mandoline Slicer made by Progressive International Corp
In the past, I have purchased/tried 4 different brands of other "plastic type" Mandoline slicers. Some of the other brands were more expensive but did not cut vegetables as well or as quickly. I found that Progressive Intl Corp model is the best for julienne cuts (turnips, potatoes, carrots, zuccini, cucumbers) and thin slicing (round onions, tomatoes, pickles).

Unfortunately the blades will get dull. You cannot slice yicama, yams, and taro on this mandoline.
This is my 4th Progressive Intl Corp Mandoline slicer. I would not purchase any other brand of "plastic type" Mandoline Slicer.

An Inhuman Egg Slicer
What separates human beings from animals is the egg slicer. The Norpro Stainless Steel Egg Slicer does not reflect human dignity in the way that a good egg slicer should. Any good egg slicer radiates truth and grace with each slice. The Norpro Egg Slicer does not.

What we need is an egg slicer that is less functional and more profound. We need a more human egg slicer.

Do not purchase this item---it reeks of animality.

This is the one you want!
You are going to be amazed at this slicer when you try it out. It is extremely sturdy compared to the plastic ones that we have. It is entirely stainless steel, and you can clean this up quite easily. I have tried this wish mushrooms, eggs, and strawberries. The wires are slightly thicker than most. If you are looking for a good slicer this is the one you need.

I have a confession to make.
I've had this for months now, and tonight is the very first time I have used it to slice anything. I've been having too much fun using it as a musical instrument. :-)

By the way, it is a great slicer. It is easy to use and produces nice clean slices.

Another reviewer mentioned that it is all stainless steel, and I don't think that is the case. The wires definitely are, but I believe the base is something other than stainless steel. I'm not sure what, but it is nice and sturdy, even if it isn't steel.

I cook for a livin'...
I bought one of these to travel with 'cause it's light...that is it's downfall. The concept is great but the exchangable blades and cutting blade flex under pressure when you try to cut/julienne big, dense veggies...like myself. This is fine for thin slices and waffle cutz tho.
This is a NORPRO so you can pick one up just about anywhere for this pice.
I bought a steel mandoline instead of depending on this lightweight.
sorry, only 2 measely mojo*z for dis looozer.

Perfect for an occasional user
I actually returned this model since I found the Norpro version the next day for $10 less. Before returning, I compared to make sure they're exactly the same (the only differences were the box and the instruction manual, both of which I actually liked better from the Norpro).

It's not the sturdiest mandoline around, but for the frequency with which I use one (about once every week or so) it's perfect. It's got a decent range for thickness settings, a nice variety of julienne cutting blades, and does waffle cuts. Setup is a snap, and cleanup is wasy as well, just be careful of all the sharp blades (I handwash)!

For an occasional user, I think it's a great product. For the price, compared to what else is available, it's one of the best deals around right now.

you only get what you pay for!
I reviewed on-line information for 10 days before purchasing this unit. I was shopping for price and features. This unit had a great rating with its 130 watt motor, and the average retail was around $90. However, this unit was a huge disappointment. I only had the unit for two weeks, and during those two weeks I only used it 3 times. I sliced one 5-lb boneless, cooked ham. Then a few days later, I sliced up a 1-lb pepperoni stick. A few days later, I sliced another 5-lb boneless, cooked ham. The slicer worked fine, "like a dream," the first time I used it. It worked just "OK" the second time, but by the third time I used it, smoke was coming out of the motor, it was running at about 1/2 the normal speed, and it was making a lot of noise. There was no way to contact Rival by phone. The only contact option was email or snail mail. I emailed them but got no response after seven days, so I returned the unit. This unit just doesn't have the "right stuff." It could be the "made in china" sticker on the bottom. I found this unit (Rival 1050-C) at Walmart.com for $59 + 4 tax + 7 S&H. I guess you only get what you pay for! Next, I am going to give the Waring F800 Pro a try. It is made in Italy and comes with a 5 year warranty on the motor. It's available for 184.95 at A2Z.com.

Great slicer, great price!
This slicer is the least expensive slicer that tilts back, giving a much better control over slicing. And has great adjustment for thickness-not quite a commerical deli slicer, but also not $500.00!! AND the Rivco.com site lists 2 customer service numbers, if one cares to look!

sliced well, impossible to really clean
The machine sliced a roast beef pretty well. However, clean-up was impossible. There was no way to remove the meat & juices that fell inside the machine.

Food slicer
I have used an older model of this slicer.
You have to remove the blade using the big slotted center screw on the blade to clean up the inside of the gear/drive case. (Caution the blade is sharp!) On the model I used you also could remove the motor and basically disassemble everything else. Because of the cleaning time this is not something you would want to use to cut up a can of spam or one small roast.
Otherwise they usually work darn good cutting slices of say 5 lb deli meats and such.

Wire broke within 2 weeks
I thought this was a good slicer until I tried to slice a block of Extra Sharp Cheddar and the wire snapped about halfway through the 3rd slice. No way to replace the wire so the whole unit is now useless. If OXO stands by their warranty, I might try to get a new one, but until then I am going to use a cheaper adjustable one.

Kind of flimsy, non-adjustable
The wire on this slicer is not adjustable, and I tend to prefer my slices a bit thinner than it does them, which is part of why I purchased a wire cheese slicer.

The wire was getting pretty slack over the past couple of months, and then when I was slicing cheese today it just broke! The wire itself didn't break, but it pulled out from the handle and is non-repairable. The good news is, I called Oxo to inquire about warranty info., and they said that it's warrantied for life and would send me out a replacement right away. The whole call took about three minutes. Maybe the one that I got was just bad, maybe they're all like this and I'll just keep getting replacements. I wish I'd purchased another kind instead, though.

cheese glorious cheese!!
I absolutely LOVE my OXO good grips wire cheese slicer. My husband told me I didn't need one.. "Cheese slicer??? What's wrong with a knife??" Bah! Nothing says cheese like a good cheese slicer to give you those nice even slices.. I got desperate. I put my OXO cheese slicer on our wedding registry. He laughed at me.. but a friend of ours got it for me!!! I can't tell you how much I love using this slicer.. The last cheese slicer I had broke after a few uses, but NOT the OXO! My OXO cheese slicer is still going strong after a year, and looks still new.. and the handle! If you've ever used OXO you know how comfortable it is in your hand!I would recommend the Oxo good grips wire cheese slicer to everyone!!!

blades
I enjoy using your prduct. (The 101W Electric Steel slicer.) But I have sooooo much trouble finding the blades. Is there anyway you can stock them at the stores you sell this products?

Ok but has issues
I've owned this slicer for several years now, being the only slicer I've owned I don't have a strong basis for comparison.

The good- Slices way better and more consistantly than a knife. I've done bread, cheese, meat and fruit.
Its a lightweight unit and seems to take up less space than some of the larger slicers.
It seems to have a longer stroke thus you can cut a bigger piece of meat.
Cleanup seems possibaly easier since the motor detaches and you can get the rest of the unit wet.

The Bad- The motor seems to heat up and loose efficiency. I tend to flick it on, slice, flick it off, bring the meat back and then repeat. The nylon drive gears and not inspiring. Sometimes if you don't have the motor screwed in real tight it will back out and make a horrid noise.

The unit seems kind of flimsy. The frame is good but the meat holding rack and guide can be deflected with pressure giving inconsistant results.

Also after use removing the blade can be very difficult. They say use a quarter. Try a quarter with vice grips maybe. Even then you'll destroy a few quarters. I went out and got the thickest screwdriver I could find and use that.

In short this unit works, its cheap and you get what you pay for. It worked well enough I suppose but I look forward to replacing it with something more robust in the future.

Awesome so far!
I've owned this slicer for five months now. I've used it to slice packaged ham into deli meats, I've used it to slice several pork roasts for BBQ sandwiches, I've sliced a couple of Elk roasts, and I've sliced cheese. I love this slicer, as it is easy to use. The motor has to get up to speed first, but really, that's not an issue. The entire assembly comes apart for cleaning, and all you need to disassemble it completly is a phillips and flat tip screwdriver.

I haven't had a bit of trouble, and use this slicer all of the time. I'm sure that there are better slicers out there, but for the hobbyist, this one does the trick. Inexpensive and dependable.

BORING!
This is, without a doubt, the most boring egg slicer that I have ever used. It was so bland and uninteresting that I can't recommend it to anyone.

broke the second week
two wires broked the second week i had this i bought this to use at work, maybe around the house it might be alright but for everyday use i would not use it at a restraunt bussiness cause it will not hold up

Works good
My mom has the best egg slicer I've ever used. I bought this one, since it looks similar - but it's not quite the same! I do disagree with some of the other reviews (how interesting is it supposed to be to slice up an egg?) I think this slicer is functional and simple, plus it's got a nice design and it's small. Very easy to clean too!
