You Don't Always Get What You Pay ForOnly two thicknesses for slices. Both too thick for potato chips.
Inserts don't stay in place. Need to hold them in place with one hand while slicing with the other. If you don't the back end will pop up at the end of each stroke and your slices will be wedge shaped.
Large julienne insert makes good french fries (if you hold it in place), but the vertical blades get bent too easily.
Too small! A russet potato is a couple of inches too long to use without cutting off an inch or two. So if you like your fries long, forget it.
Pay a few extra bucks and get something useful.
Pretty Good Item for the Price
Mandoline Slicer made by Progressive International CorpUnfortunately the blades will get dull. You cannot slice yicama, yams, and taro on this mandoline.
This is my 4th Progressive Intl Corp Mandoline slicer. I would not purchase any other brand of "plastic type" Mandoline Slicer.

- Yields uniform round or oval egg slices
- Slices mushrooms evenly and quickly
- Measures 5 by 4 inches; inner nest is 3 by 3 inches
- Stainless-steel cutting wires
- User-friendly, oval-shaped design

An Inhuman Egg SlicerWhat we need is an egg slicer that is less functional and more profound. We need a more human egg slicer.
Do not purchase this item---it reeks of animality.
This is the one you want!
I have a confession to make.By the way, it is a great slicer. It is easy to use and produces nice clean slices.
Another reviewer mentioned that it is all stainless steel, and I don't think that is the case. The wires definitely are, but I believe the base is something other than stainless steel. I'm not sure what, but it is nice and sturdy, even if it isn't steel.

- Crafted of durable composite material with stainless steel blades
- Heavy-gauge frame with protective hand guard
- Comes with 3 julienne cutting blades
- Dishwasher safe

I cook for a livin'...This is a NORPRO so you can pick one up just about anywhere for this pice.
I bought a steel mandoline instead of depending on this lightweight.
sorry, only 2 measely mojo*z for dis looozer.
Perfect for an occasional userIt's not the sturdiest mandoline around, but for the frequency with which I use one (about once every week or so) it's perfect. It's got a decent range for thickness settings, a nice variety of julienne cutting blades, and does waffle cuts. Setup is a snap, and cleanup is wasy as well, just be careful of all the sharp blades (I handwash)!
For an occasional user, I think it's a great product. For the price, compared to what else is available, it's one of the best deals around right now.

sliced well, impossible to really clean
Food slicerYou have to remove the blade using the big slotted center screw on the blade to clean up the inside of the gear/drive case. (Caution the blade is sharp!) On the model I used you also could remove the motor and basically disassemble everything else. Because of the cleaning time this is not something you would want to use to cut up a can of spam or one small roast.
Otherwise they usually work darn good cutting slices of say 5 lb deli meats and such.

Wire broke within 2 weeks
Kind of flimsy, non-adjustableThe wire was getting pretty slack over the past couple of months, and then when I was slicing cheese today it just broke! The wire itself didn't break, but it pulled out from the handle and is non-repairable. The good news is, I called Oxo to inquire about warranty info., and they said that it's warrantied for life and would send me out a replacement right away. The whole call took about three minutes. Maybe the one that I got was just bad, maybe they're all like this and I'll just keep getting replacements. I wish I'd purchased another kind instead, though.

blades
Ok but has issuesThe good- Slices way better and more consistantly than a knife. I've done bread, cheese, meat and fruit.
Its a lightweight unit and seems to take up less space than some of the larger slicers.
It seems to have a longer stroke thus you can cut a bigger piece of meat.
Cleanup seems possibaly easier since the motor detaches and you can get the rest of the unit wet.
The Bad- The motor seems to heat up and loose efficiency. I tend to flick it on, slice, flick it off, bring the meat back and then repeat. The nylon drive gears and not inspiring. Sometimes if you don't have the motor screwed in real tight it will back out and make a horrid noise.
The unit seems kind of flimsy. The frame is good but the meat holding rack and guide can be deflected with pressure giving inconsistant results.
Also after use removing the blade can be very difficult. They say use a quarter. Try a quarter with vice grips maybe. Even then you'll destroy a few quarters. I went out and got the thickest screwdriver I could find and use that.
In short this unit works, its cheap and you get what you pay for. It worked well enough I suppose but I look forward to replacing it with something more robust in the future.
Awesome so far!I haven't had a bit of trouble, and use this slicer all of the time. I'm sure that there are better slicers out there, but for the hobbyist, this one does the trick. Inexpensive and dependable.

- Egg slicer for perfectly sliced hors d'oeuvre
- Hinged case made of durable black plastic
- Cutting wires slice easily through hardboiled eggs
- Stainless-steel assembly removes for cleaning
- Place over bowl or plate

BORING!
broke the second week
Works good
I wasn't too impressed. When not in use, the julienne blades dangle below the path of the slices, slightly scoring the underside of each slice as it comes out. Also, when not in use, the julienne blades get in the way of the adjustment plate and limit how much you can open the cutting slot to (I'm guessing) less than 1/4 inch. If you want to make thicker slices and/or get rid of the scoring, you have to get out a nut driver to remove the julienne blade assembly.
The blades are not particularly sharp after you use it for a while. They can cut yellow squash fine, but sweet potatoes jam halfway through the cutting slot. This makes it fairly dangerous to use because things jump around. I just saw a Bron in a store which had a different straight blade. Instead of being one piece, it had a separate leading edge spot-welded to the rest of the plate. Maybe this would solve the sharpness problem.
The mandoline guard is a complete joke. It is exremely noisy, can't hold larger items, can't hold skinny items (like carrots) upright, pushes down on the item at an angle so things tend to pop out or flip over, doesn't hold the item securely aginst the bottom so slices are uneven thickness, etc. I sent it back.
I think this particular mandoline is living on its reputation. I've gone back to using the Borner which provides MUCH better straight slices (but no wavy cuts), and only costs about 1/3 as much. It also has a much better safety holder. The frame is all plastic, so it's not good for heavy use, but the blades are very sharp and it's very easy to use: just a gentle zip-zip back and forth and the slices pile up.
