Mikasa Firenze dinnerware
good stuff
- Overture pattern makes a dramatic, contemporary statement
- Delicate black pinstripes encircle a white background
- Made of chip-resistant china strong enough to be used everyday
- 4 each: dinner plate, salad plate, soup bowl, teacup, and saucer
- Safe for microwave, dishwasher, and oven at low temperatures
List price: $220.00 (that's 55% off!)

Pattern is striking, but quality is questionable...Also, I noticed on the ones in display at Bed, Bath & Beyond had a chip on one or two, so I have long term doubts about Mikasa's claim of "chip-resistant".... Also, BB&B advertised these as for "oven warming only", so I am also leary of Mikasa's claim of "dishwasher to oven"... (ah, yes, but what temperature...) Anyway , I was tired of stoneware and paper plates...

Not as expectedI was also rather disappointed by the "easy care tips": Avoid harsh detergents containing lemon as they can harm flatware surfaces. Wash your stainless as soon as possible after each meal. This will prevent prolonged contact with harsh, acidic foods that may cause discoloration, corroding or pitting. It is also preferable to wash your stainless separately from aluminum, sterling, or silverplate. Never let your flatware soak (even in plain water) or leave unwashed overnight. (etc.)
The flatware is also "oversized", which is okay, but it would have been nice to know that in advance.
All in all, I like the style of the flatware, but I wish the quality was what I had expected.

A little disappointedAnd I have to throw in a plug - Amazon delivers like lightening, "Super Saver" shipping or not. I love these guys.
I guess the weight is my biggest disappointment. Another reviewer spoke highly of this being the upper of four tiers of Oneida flatware and gave high marks to the heft of the pieces. I guess it's what you're used to, but these pieces feel very lightweight to me.
I was also disappointed with the finish of the underside of the utensils. The knives have the same satin base + polished accent appearance on both sides. All other pieces have the satin/polished design you see in the photos, but only when they're face up. Turn them over and you're looking at the concave underside of the pretty surface shown in the photo. That's probably why the knives have at least some small heft to them and the other pieces feel like chopsticks.
It does look good on the table, and in terms of sheer piece count you'll have a very hard time doing better for the money. But once you or your guests pick up a fork, it's immediately obvious that this is a "starter" set. If that's what you're looking for, this is a really good deal. But if you're looking to upgrade and/or impress your rich relations, look at pricier offerings. You gets what you pays for.
Not Wal-Mart's OneidaWhen they arrived I realized that there were a few things about Oneida flatware that no one seems to mention. First of all is the fact that they actually make four grades. This set is their top line stuff and when you hold it in your hand you can indeed tell the difference. Heft, finish, and balance are all excellent for the money. Even the scale of the forks is a little larger than the cheaper sets. The eight extra teaspoons are a nice touch. This is a set of "silverware" that is durable enough for everyday but dresses up nicely for fancy events. Since I buy my stuff to be used I'm extremely happy with this set.

Great clock, but could be improvedThe clock controls could could be improved, however. It is dumb to put the button for changing the time zone on the front, many times I have inadvertantly hit it and then you are off by an hour. Put the button on the back! There is also only one alarm, which I find a hassle since I have to get up at different times during the week.
Good clock. But the clock is very well behaved. After pulling out the protective tabs on the battery (included) it tried to receive the time signal. It failed the first time (as expected this time of year) but by morning it had succeeded in phoning home.
The alarm is a little tricky to set. It took me a minute to figure out without reading the instructions (hey I enjoy a challenge).
The alarm is very polite. It starts out with a mild peep that repeats about once a second, and then builds slowly to a crescendo of beeping. It never gets loud enough to wake the dead, so if you are dead, you might want to consider another clock.
The display is backlit; pressing on the light/snooze bar on the top lights its face for about 3 seconds. The display is large enough to be visible from across the room.
The clock itself is constructed of thick plastic. It feels like OS has included extra weights in the base, so be careful when flinging it across the room; it may dent walls.
