For animal hair pick up, this can't be beat.
best purchase!I previously had an old Dustbuster, and it turned me off to hand-vacs. I purchased this one only because I found it on sale. I've never regretted it-- it makes an easy job out of even the hairiest messes.

NOT FOR THE WEAK!!You'll soon see why the "self-propelled" feature is so important.
It has performed well, though...cleaning up after 3 cats and 2 dogs. The bags are expensive and the final HEPA filter is about 8-9 bucks, but worth it if you're trying to stay one step ahead of the pet hair.
Other than the excessive weight, there are a couple of other things that make using this vacuum a chore...
The hose is ridiculously short and this thing will tip easily, so trying to reach under furniture with an attachment becomes risky business and being thumped in the head by the handle gets old fast.
The carpet height adjustment is located on the front of the machine and it is a sliding bar. Trying to adjust for carpet heights is no easy task. You have to stop the machine, go around to the front and the little lever gives a fight before it surrenders. I generally just turn it off to make this itty-bitty adjustment.
The body is large and bulky and doesn't cruise around furniture easily. Cumbersome.
The little headlight on the front is nifty and the embedded dirt finder is pretty cool, too.
All in all, it does what a vacuum cleaner is made to do, however, this is not a machine for everyone. Hauling this big boy out every day for a quick clean-up is no delight. I would recommend this machine when Hoover has trimmed about 8-10 pounds off of its weight and has streamlined the design a little bit.
Hope this helps someone. :-)
So far, so good...Like another reviewer mentioned, I do feel the self-propelled mechanism drives the vacuum a little too quickly, but in my case I leave it on and let it help me finish in record time! Occasionally, the intake hose will get dislodged and have to be reseated during vacuuming, but this only happens if you're a klutz like me and tend to get the vacuum hose hooked on something accidentally... it's a simple matter to reseat the hose, and it is not prone to coming loose by itself.
Changing the vacuum cleaner bag was a frustrating ordeal the first and second tries, but then it becomes very easy (though not a one-handed task). The bags are sturdy and hold quite a bit before they need to be thrown away; they also aren't prone to coughing out dust and contaminants when you handle them, like flimsier, cheaper brands.

Highly Recommended--With Some Caveats
Pros: Things get super clean without chemicals...Easy to carry...Easy to use...Great for cleaning icky difficult areas like around sink fixtures, toilet hinges, shower door tracks, gunky trash cans, etc...Great for cleaning linoleum & tile floors (I have not tried it on carpet yet) as long as the dirt is not terribly embedded in a textured surface (normal spills left to dry for days will come right off a smooth surface)... Great for cleaning the inside of your refrigerator...It will clean exterior windows/sliding glass doors that are really dirty, quickly with very little effort...Any crevice areas that are normally hard to clean, including caulked areas (but be careful not to melt the caulk by holding the steam on one spot too long)...Outdoor resin furniture...I cleaned a box fan that had 12 years of crusted-on dirt (it took a while, though.) One reviewer here said that the steam isn't hot enough to actually disinfect, but it seems that steam is by definition hotter than boiling water so it must have *some* disinfecting power. The Steam Buggy would be perfect for cleaning goop off of baby high-chair trays, rattles, diaper pails, etc...It's also supposed to kill dustmites, which is a great benefit for allergy sufferers--you can just run the steam over your sofa, pillows, etc., then let them dry.
Cons: The cleaning is not instantaneous, but if you clean regularly it goes much faster than it does on super-filthy neglected areas...You have to wipe as you go (dirt is dissolved in the steam and you wipe off the damp area), although on some surfaces, you can just rinse with water instead of wiping (like a shower). The wiping is not a huge deal, but just be aware...You can't turn the steam off instantaneously, but it takes probably less than a minute...You have to let it cool for a couple minutes before changing attachments and 4-5 minutes before refilling (I don't find this a big deal)...It doesn't clean as well on certain things; for example, I still need to scrub the tub to really remove the film of dirt, and it doesn't do much for the inside of the toilet bowl. Also really textured linoleum I had to scrub to get the worst dirt out...To clean off hard water deposits, use distilled water in the tank--using your regular hard water that caused the deposits in the first place isn't nearly as effective.
Overall, I'm very happy with the Steam Buggy and have recommended it to a lot of people. A little baking soda or SoftScrub can take care of any scrubbing that it can't handle, but it takes care of a lot. It also allows you to get gross stuff very clean without having to really touch it, and eliminates dealing with buckets. It takes a little while longer to use than you might imagine from the Infomercial, but uses a lot less effort than conventional cleaning methods, without introducing chemicals into the environment or your & your family's skin & lungs.
Tri Star Steam BuggyI had purchased the Eureka HotShot prior to ordering the Steam Buggy, and though this product was effective, the resevoir was much smaller and would only steam clean for 3 to 4 min. and I had to refill 3 times more often with HotShot vs. Steam Buggy.
Steam Buggy is fairly light and easy to tote. The attatchments are much easier to change than on HotShot. At first use, SB was a little cumbersome, but one I got the hang of it, cleaning was a breeze!
An added benefit:
While cleaning, you inadvertantly get a sauna and facial at the same time! =)

Powerful VacAll in all, it's a good vacuum. I empty the dirt container outside to avoid making a mess when shaking and tapping the perma-filter. This isn't that big of a deal because it doesn't need changing after every use. The perma-filter located in the dirt container is supposed to last the life of the vacuum, while the HEPA filter should be replaced yearly. (...)
Clean up quick, mostly. As to filtration, it does great. I think that the air coming out the discharge is fresher than the air in the room.
So why not five stars?
-Balance: This vacuum has a hose attachment with all kinds of extras that is supposed to be able to reach up to 16 feet. It has a little hook on the hose that you attach to the vacuum base while using the hose. The problem I have found is that if I step away from the base to strech the hose, the tension on the hose causes the vacuum to fall over. In order to use the hose, I have to keep one hand on the base. So much for reaching 16 feet!
-Durability: Granted, vacuums were not intended for use on paperclips and pennies. However, this is one place where a bag-style vacuum has the advantage. My (former, non-wife) roommate vacuumed one day when I wasn't home. He sucked up a penny, which whipped around in the plastic container and broke a hole in it. You couldn't use the vacuum because it just spewed dust into the air. Replacing it was pricy (I think it was around fifty, but my roommate paid for it).
*****Final Thoughts*****
This vacuum works well, and I would buy it again if I needed a new one!
Don't expect to use the hose much.
If you have kids, plan on getting a bag vacuum, because there's too much chance of picking up something that will break your vacuum canister.
This vacuum SUCKS, but in a good way!

Great For Cleaning Carpeted Stairs!
A good tool, but not a miracle makerIt cleans better than the chemical cleaners. However, for tough stuff like carbonized grease - you still have to scrub. Since you have to go through the area with steam instead of simply spraying chemicals, the cleaning may take a little bit longer as well.
It works wonderfully on glass, metal, and counter tops. Unfortunately, anything that is has a soft or rough surface has proven to be a challenge.
I wish this unit would hold more water. It would only produce steam for 7-10 minutes of cleaning. Then again, it is a hand held unit, more water will increase the weight of the device.
How can cleaning be fun???I had to clean my house before selling it recently, and I had to do the unthinkable. Yup, I had to actually exert myself in that one activity I hate more than anything else. And that'd be cleaning. Downcast and sullen, I labored through the task at hand with as much gusto as I could gather, but it wasn't until my folks, who were helping me in my endeavours, pulled out this wondrous device that the experience actually became good.
Pour water in it, plug it in and let it heat up. After some minutes pass, press the trigger and the hand steamer exerts a jet of high-powered steam that will remove any stain. Yes, any stain. I was so impressed with the demos my Mom was showing me that I had to try myself on the grunge on the kitchen floor. After a few sweeps I had to try on something else. So the front of my refrigerator became my next victim. After that I was looking around for something else...anything else. And as I began this on the dryer in the laundry room I realized that I was actually *enjoying* the experience.
This thing gets into cracks and crevices that noone could ever dream of getting to before, cleans them, and as a bonus sterilizes them completely. My bathroom is in cleaner, better shape now then it was when I first got the house!
There's several different attachments that you can put on the nozzle to make the steam come out at different angles, and others that can allow you to steam clean mirrors or flat surfaces. It is beyond easy to operate and is perversely enjoyable, even for a self proclaimed couch-potato such as myself. I recommend this for anyone wanting to get stains or dirt off of surfaces that nothing short of molecular acid and a brillo pad will remove. But don't be surprised if your husband/fiance'/boyfriend eventually steals it from you to do the task themselves. You might even see them smile as they work!

Battery Replacement
Finally, a handheld vac that really sucks (dirt, that is!)Our Dust Buster Deluxe lives downstairs near our entryway, plugged into its rechargeable stand. The Deluxe has plenty of power to remove all traces of high volume mishaps, such as when a potted plant suddenly finds itself green-side-down on your carpet. It also has sufficient battery power, when fully charged, to vaccuum dirt, dust and debris from a standard two-story home's carpeted staircase, though I generally start vacuuming wherever the soiling is greatest to ensure the vacuum's providing maximum suction/cleaning capability, just in case.
The vacuum works equally well on hard surfaces as carpeted ones, making it handy for ridding tiled entryways of leaves, grass clippings, pine needles or dried dirt from shoes. If you have pet cats with a scratching post (or items of furniture they've adopted as their scratching post), the Deluxe also makes quick work of removing all the carpet and upholstery fibers little Kitty's workouts deposit around the house. Some hand vacuum's don't have a generous enough opening to vacuum up thick, twisted carpet fibers, but the Deluxe does the job without complaint.
My only complaint would be battery life, like other reviewers have mentioned, but since I leave it in the charging base after each use that's only a minor inconvenience -- a good excuse to take a break during whirlwind home cleaning sprees, allowing me to recharge as well as the vacuum!
Still great after MANY yearsI really like this dustbuster: I have absolutely no intention of replacing it for a "newer model" until it absolutely dies. This is one item I have bought where "planned obsolesence" didn't seem to be among the design features!

- Vacuums 15-inch path illuminated with headlight; adjusts for carpet height
- Embedded-dirt-finder signals with red light when extra cleaning needed
- Handy, up-front storage for dusting brush, crevice tool, upholstery nozzle
- Uses disposable allergen-filtration bag
- Washable filters protect motor, clean air returning to room

NOT FOR ANIMAL LOVERS
Pretty Good Vacuum
I love this vacuum!!!
Some of the complaints sound like mistakes. For instance, I ran the vacuum with the pile setting on low. The vaccuum would get hot and start to smell. The machine was difficult to push. I realized later that was my screw up. The brushes were digging into the carpet and working overtime to brush the carpet. I set it on a more medium setting. My carpets are still burshed (you can see this) and the vaccum stopped overheating. It glides easily over carpets when the pile setting is right.
I also had trouble on bare floors. Dirt was kicked out the back. I realized this was a RtFM (read the frigging manual) problem. Pile setting should be on high for floors. The rotating brush was slapping dirt around because I didn't change the setting when going to floor.
Bagless, in general, is a different animal and you need to change habits. Most people empty bags when they are vaccuuming and realize the vacuum isn't picking up well or at the end of the chore. This is a bad habit for bagless. The dirt which is still flying around from being sucked up is going to make a mess if you empty it after vacuuming. I empty the cup before I start and leave what I vacuum in till next time. This gives it time to settle and mat down. When I toss it in the trash it is MUCH less messy. It cuts down on the mess on the vacuum itself, but that is always dusty still. If I have to empty while I'm vacuuming I let it sits for a few minutes and do something else then empty it into a doubled plastic grocery bag.
The hepa's are expensive and make the bagless vs. bags just as expensive, probably more if you don't shop around.
I noticed people complaining that the cup filled up quickly. That means your carpets are just that dirty and the vacuum is doing its job. Many people talk about the huge difference between my new vs my old. This is common sense. And old vacuum will lose suction over the years and not clean as well. COmparing a 5yr old vacuum to most new ones, the new ones will always impress. I vacuumed my living room 4 times when I got this one. Eat time the cup filled up, except for the last run. That's when I released the rug was finally clean. When I could vacuum and the cup didn't fill up.
As for clogs--the only time this vacuum has every clogged on me was vacuumming pine needles after the christmas tree was ditched to the curb. Everyone should realize that cleaning up pine needles has killed many a vacuum. This year I was very lazy and vacuumed up twigs and bits of branch with needles and mine was jammed at the base and the top. I did not have to take the whole thing apart. THe vacuum will pivot flat so the 90-degree turn becomes paractically a straight path. Being lazy I churned the mess with a letter opener and turned the vacuum upside down and it all fell out. The top hose detaches simply and you can unclog it by hand. The person who took the whole vacuum apart probably didn't know how to unclog it. Every vacuum I've ever had has choked on pine needles--expecting a vacuum not to is unreasonable. If I had one I would use a ShopVac for cleaning up needles as that type of vacuum is designed not to clog on larger bits.
The vaccuum has good power and decent noise levels. It is better on edging sides than the front. But I often redo some edges cause the carpet forms a little niche that needs to be brushed with the hose to really get clean. (pine needles hide in the edge)
The vacuum will tip over too easily when using the hose, which is annoying and bad. If something plugs the hose the accordion-style hose will collapse yanking the vacuum over (a problem anytime your vaccum is more powerful than it is heavy-hey we said we wanted lightweight AND powerful). The attachments are fine. However the clip to release the dirt cup is tough to release-being a guy I was suprised how hard it was. People with arthritis or weak hands won't be able to open and close it. Putting it back it was worse. I typically set it on the hook and slap it hard to get it to snap into place. That slap into place often caused little puffs of dust.
Someone still needs to design a better bagless.
